Young Adult Life Skills Training At BTMA

The most important life skill we all need is the ability to have healthy relationships. Healthy Relationship skills are about trust, honesty, communication, boundaries, and compromise. Sounds simple enough, but sometimes struggling young adults don’t see relationships in such black-and-white terms.

Life Skills Training In Our Christian Rehab for Young Adult Men

Young men who struggle with addiction issues often need help learning life skills such as problem-solving, effective communication skills, money management, time management, self-awareness and respect for personal boundaries. Life skills are regarded as being just as important as academics. At our BTMA Young Adult Life Skills Training program, we help young men learn more about themselves and the strengths and weaknesses they possess in many of these life skills areas.

For example, respect is a very important life skill every adult needs to cultivate to have healthy relationships. Respect comes in two forms – respect for self and respect for others. Although they may not appear to be connected, these two forms of respect are interconnected in several ways: For people to show respect to other people, animals, nature, their community, the environment, and the universe, they must have a deep respect for themselves. Without this respect for self, it becomes difficult to empathize with the plight of others.

Secondly, people are constantly attempting to balance their self-interests and the interests of others. And finally, a basic human value that individuals strive for is social interest, or the concern and respect for other people in the world and helping to build a better future for others. At Beartooth Mt. Ascent, our Young Adult Life Skills Training approach is based on Virtue formation. This helps the young men learn to respect the dignity and worth of every human being. This process often starts with learning how to respect and work with animals. When the young men are responsible for taking care of the feeding and watering of the livestock, for example, they experience first hand what it means to have another living being totally dependent on them to stay alive and thrive.

What Makes a Relationship Healthy?

Our Young Adult Life Skills and addiction recovery training is centered around being concerned about others. The young men are given the opportunity to experience a greater sense of generosity, contribute to the well-being of others, and find joy in their sense of serving others.
Our goal is to help every young adult in our Catholic addiction recovery program learn to appreciate how great it feels to serve others. Whether their service is directed to the community (or world), is found through formal organizations, or through informal involvement in social issues, the participants are learning to serve others, and discover who they are and what their unique gifts are. Pope John Paul understood the importance of this vital life skill of serving others, and captured this principle in this statement ” One can only discover who they truly are, by giving the sincere gift of themselves for the good of others”.
